The area of Aberlady and East Lothian

Aberlady is an old village in East Lothian dating from at least the 7th century AD, being confirmed as the port for the nearby town of Haddington in 1633. Amenities in the village include a Post Office, a village store, an Inn, an hotel, a fish and chip shop anda textiles & gifts shop. There is also the nearby “Gosford Bothy”, which is a well-known coffee and lunch stop, also selling a range of organic meats (including Wild Boar) and vegetables.

From the Flat you can walk across the Green to Aberlady Bay Nature Reserve to see migrating wildfowl, waders and seabirds. Slightly along the main road is the formal entrance to the Nature Reserve, which takes the form of a long footbridge over the Peffer Burn, which was a favourite with the famous Scottish author Nigel Tranter, who used to live just across the road. The Scottish Ornithological Society has its headquarters in the village for bird-watching, set within the Gosford Estate.

East Lothian is a beautiful county, being a paradise for artists, and in particular having some glorious walks, for example on the sandy beaches at nearby Gullane and Dirleton.

Edinburgh with its multitude of attractions is only just over 20 minutes away by train from Longniddry (the next village along the coast) with free car parking at the station.

Golfers will probably already know that Aberlady is very central for some of the best golf in Scotland: Muirfield, the home of the Open Golf Championship, is 4 miles away. Gullane (3 courses), Craigielaw, Kilspindie, Luffness and Longniddry are even closer. St Andrews is a 90 minute car journey away.

Other recommended local activities are: exploring the castles at nearby Dirleton and Tantallon, visiting Glenkinchie whisky distillery, the Museum of Flight at East Fortune (see Concorde there), spending time at the award-winning Seabird Centre in North Berwick, or even taking a boat round the famous Bass Rock to see kittiwakes, puffins and the largest colony of gannets in Europe. The nearby Museum of Flight has one of the remaining Concordes on display. The Myreton Motor Museum, which is just outside the village, has an impressive collection of vehicles from a bygone age.
