History and location
Sunset View is an historic listed building on Sea Wynd in the East Lothian village of Aberlady, with a very well-documented history. Aberlady is a small village overlooking the Firth of Forth on the coastal route from North Berwick to Edinburgh.
The Upper Flat has spectacular views from its front rooms across the village green and over the Nature Reserve of Aberlady Bay, towards Gullane.
In the early 1800’s, the house was reputedly associated with smugglers, who imported brandy and other contraband from Holland.
It was known as the “Old Ship”, due to the sailing galleon carved on the outside front wall at first floor leveland as reproduced on the Home Page of this website.
The house was also the central scene in the historical local story entitled “The Skipper’s Daughters”. Its most famous owner and occupier was a Captain Smith, a retired seafaring man.
With walls of three feet thick, the age of the building must be acknowledged and appreciated!
