Mount Lothian is East Fortune Aeromodellers’ second airfield. The reason for having two flying sites is that at East Fortune you cannot fly fixed-wing while the Sunday market is on (it finishes about 4.30pm) and you mustn’t fly when there are motor bike people around, as well as not flying on race days. Because of these restrictions, the Club is developing this new airfield which is in the Penicuik area.
The site is still in the process of being set up but you can fly from it now. The site has a lot of potential and there are no restrictions on flying times apart from the weather and the daylight!
As you can see the runway is fairly large but a bit bumpy so big wheels are advised. There is going to be a hardcore track put down in the entrance of the field, as the entrance is very boggy. There is a frequency peg board on a fence post which is just to the left, out of the picture.
The runway runs roughly West-East which is the prevailing wind direction.
Just to prove to you that Mount Lothian is usable and that people will be there on Sundays, weather permitting - this was on a Sunday in January 2006!
