East Fortune Aeromodellers is a model aircraft club that is situated next to the Museum of Flight in East Lothian. It has probably one of the best flying facilities in Scotland. It has a large tarmac runway which is part of a race track, a large clubhut with plenty of seats, an anemometer and a heater for when you’re wanting to fly in literally freezing conditions.
Not only all that but the East Fortune club is getting another site ready for model flying use, which is around the area of Mount Lothian. The reason for this extra field is because East Fortune has quite a lot of rules and regulations, the main ones being no flying of fixed wing (unless they’re under a certain size) on a Sunday until 4.30p.m.
The members there are very friendly and will gladly help any beginners or give advice to the sportsman flyer. There is also quite a large range of models here like large F3A aircraft, scale aircraft, 3D aircraft, electrics and helicopters.
This is one of the biggest scale models flown at East Fortune. It is a Boing Stearman. It now has a 5-cylinder engine. It looks absolutely beautiful in the air and you might be able to see it flying on one of the Museum of Flight days. The models are usually flown at the other end of the Museum of Flight airfield to where you come in.
If you join the East Fortune Aeromodellers you should be able to see most of the different types of aircraft and some helicopters as well.
You will almost certainly see a few F3A aircraft (as one of them is mine) of the types shown in the photo on the Aerobatics page.
You can see just how good the runway is at East Fortune from this picture. It also gives you an idea of how big the runway is as well as that’s a large biplane.
